Alex Ferguson announces Mick Phelan as new number two at United
September 3, 2008
Alex Ferguson has announced that his new assistant manager will be former player and first team coach Mick Phelan. You may have seen him filling in for Fergie with various media duties; most notably Match of the Day. United have been without a number 2 since Carlos Quieroz quit the post this summer in favour of managing Portugal. Ferguson also announced that Rene Meulensteen will take over first team coaching responsibilities.
“I am delighted that Mick and Rene have agreed to fill these important positions” he told manutd.com.
“Mick knows Manchester United inside out, having been associated with the club for the best part of 20 years. He is a very talented and professional coach, whose ability and contribution to the club’s success has often been understated.
“Rene brings different ideas and experience to the role of first team coach. I believe he and Mick will provide an excellent team to continue the club’s willingness to try new ideas and constantly drive for success in an increasingly competitive game.”
In his playing days, Phelan made 146 appearances for Manchester United and scored 3 goals. He made his debut in a 4 – 1 victory over Arsenal at Old Trafford in August 1998.

Well, Sir Alex must find the assistant that has same quality as Carlos Quieroz.
