Ben Foster ruled out for up to eight weeks

United goalkeeper Ben Foster has been ruled out for up to eight weeks following an injury picked up in United Reserve’s 0 – 0 draw with Blackburn.

Foster was out for the best part of a year after he required surgery on a cruciate knee ligament injury in June 2007 but Ferguson was quick to point out the injuries are unrelated: “This has nothing to do with his previous injury – that was a cruciate knee injury. It was just bad luck”.

Foster lasted for just over an hour before falling awkwardly and twisting his ankle on Thursday night. This latest injury will be major setback for the young goalkeeper as he is desperate to show what he can do in a United shirt and fully deserves his opportunity.

“Ben’s not had any luck,” Sir Alex said at his Friday press conference. “He was coming on fantastically, he’s been training really well. I made him substitute on Wednesday, which gives you an indication of his return to fitness.

“He’s been blighted by injuries so far in his career. He’s a top goalkeeper and I just hope he gets a little break now.”
