Premier League round-up 4-5 April

6 April 09 by Christopher Hurley

For anyone who hasn’t recovered from the drama of yesterday afternoon here is a review of the other games that took place this weekend.

Liverpool (briefly) went top of the league with a last-gasp win over Fulham. The Reds must have thought it wasn’t going to be their day when they hit the woodwork four times, but sub Yossi Benayoun popped up in the 92nd minute to grab all three points. Fulham 0-1 Liverpool.

It was all about Alan Shearer in the North-East on Saturday as the prodigal son returned to try and save the club from the drop. If he didn’t know how hard the job would be before the match he will have afterwards as Chelsea came away with a comfortable 2-0 win thanks to goals from Lampard and Malouda. Newcastle 0-2 Chelsea.

Arsenal consolidated their position in fourth with a win over Man City whose poor away form continued. Emmanuel Adebayor put the Gunners in front after just eight minutes and the Togo international struck again four minutes into the second half to seal the win. Arsenal 0-2 Man City.

Everton continued their march towards a European place with a convincing 4-0 win over Wigan. On-loan Brazilian striker Jo fired the Toffees in front in the first half before Marouane Fellaini doubled the lead after 49 minutes. Two minutes later Jo struck again before Leon Osman finished things off just after the hour. Everton 4-0 Wigan.

Blackburn came from behind to grab a vital three points in their battle for survival against Spurs. Robbie Keane put Spurs in front from the penalty spot in the first half. But two goals in the final ten minutes turned things round for Rovers. First Benni McCarthy levelled things on 82 before defender Andre Ooijer pounced with a minute to go to send Ewood Park into raptures. Blackburn 2-1 Tottenham.

Bolton piled on the misery for Middlesbrough who look a safe football bet to be relegated. Kevin Davies gave Bolton an early lead but Gary O’Neil levelled things up after 38 minutes. But Boro were level for just six minutes as Gary Cahill restored Bolton’s lead a minute before half-time. Matty Taylor’s free-kick put Wanderers in control in the second period before Riccardo Gardner put a gloss on the win with six minutes to go. Bolton 4-1 Middlesbrough.

Hull and Portsmouth fought out a goalless draw at the KC Stadium but the point does little to help either in their battle for survival. Pompey’s Hermann Hreidarsson had the best chance of the game but his header came off the post. Glenn Johnson saw red for two bookable offences but Hull failed to capitalise and had to settle for a point. Hull 0-0 Portsmouth.

Stoke grabbed a vital win away at West Brom who are almost certainly going to play Championship football next season. Ricardo Fuller capitalised on a defensive error to fire the Potters into the lead early on. James Beattie continued his goal scoring form after 49 minutes when he doubled Stoke’s advantage and ended the Baggies’ resistance. West Brom 0-2 Stoke.

West Ham’s quest for a European place continued with a win over struggling Sunderland. It was all about the youngsters in East London as two Hammers Academy graduates made their mark. Junior Stanislas side-footed Gianfranco Zola’s side in front in the first half before defender James Tomkins rose highest from a corner to put his side two in front and secure the points. West Ham 2-0 Sunderland.

Painful wins for both Man Utd and the scousers, both teams winning in added time really… Macheda seems ready to play in the EPL, and may be next season we’ll see more of him, as well as welbeck. Tevez once again worked his socks off, but didnt make the impact expected from him as a striker, remember he is not one :) , and for those who didnt knw, his position is a SS (Shadow striker- the man who feeds the strikers for goals)
I expect a super perf from Rooney this evening against Porto, and a comfortable win in this 1st leg will do the job for the return one.
