Ronaldo finishes the Premier League top scorer

May 12, 2008

Ronaldo’s penalty against Wigan was enough to see him equal top spot for goals scored in a Premiership season as he took his tally to an incredible 31. Alan Shearer scored 31 goals in the 95/96 season and has been the only player to manage so many in a 38 game season ever since. The feat stands out as even more impressive when you consider Ronaldo plays most of his football from the midfield and his goals tally is easily the most goals scored by a midfielder in one season.

Andy Cole and Alan Shearer scored 34 goals each in a Premiership season for Newcastle and Blackburn respectively, but both when the Premier League consisted of 42 games a season.

Alan Shearer still holds the Premier League’s all time top goal scorer award with 260 goals. After 5 years in the Premiership Ronaldo has slotted home 66 times and finds himself number 37 on the list.

When asked how he could top this season, Ronaldo calmly replied, “next year I’ll score 50″. Confident, arrogant, yes, possible? Maybe. One thing that is in no doubt, if he stays in England, at only 23, his sights will surely be set on that record.
