Sorry Benitez, Liverpool can’t beat United’s untouchables

21 February 09 by Bill

It must be a frustrating time for Rafael Benitez. As much as he wants to win the Premier League for the first time in Liverpool’s history, deep down, he knows it isn’t going to happen – at least not this year. Having already conceded Liverpool cannot compete with United financially, all that is left is for him to concede this season’s title race. But of course, he’s no Wenger; he’s not going to do that.

Instead, Benitez is coming out on the offensive claiming this United side are “good” but definitely not “untouchable”.

“I’m sure that you can see a lot of games where they weren’t playing that well and weren’t scoring a lot of goals. I think the other teams know that, until the last few games, they were winning a lot of games 1-0, but then, after two or three results, people are talking about the whole season” he said.

Okay, so let’s clear this up, United ARE having a good season. It’s not just the last two or three games. United are unbeaten at Old Trafford this season in all competitions and have lost just 4 games away from home. A lot of those one nils that Benitez talks about were games which should have been two or three nils. United always carved out chances, just sometimes they weren’t taken.

And the importance of the last two or three games? It’s called form and United are in great form. Apart from that 1 – 0 defeat to Derby in the League Cup (which was overturned in the second leg), United have won every game this year. People may well get excited by United’s recent form and so they should – it’s fantastic.

How about Liverpool’s form? They were lucky to beat Portsmouth in their last Premiership outing thanks to a late Torres strike and although they have beaten Chelsea this year, they also only managed draws with Wigan, Everton and Stoke. Hardly championship form.

Manchester United play Blackburn later today in a bid to extend their lead at the top. Should they manage it, Liverpool will face Manchester City tomorrow in what will almost certainly be dubbed a must win fixture. Liverpool still have to come to Old Trafford this season and whilst Benitez is publicly claiming his side are up for the challenge, in truth and on form, they are most certainly not.

Currently, Liverpool are five points behind United. With any luck, that will be eight in a few hours and by the end of the season, it’ll be even more.

Liverpool doesn’t stand a chance? Man U are untouchable? You can tell this was written by a Man United fan lol Liverpool already beat you guys that has already been proven and we can win the title as long as injuries don’t come in play

@Saba: First off, the “untouchable” label was given by Arsene Wenger – NOT a Man utd fan.

Also, beating man utd is not proof of a teams ability to win the league. the league is hard and it takes more than one match. Liverpool will prove they can win the title when they DO win the title. the fact Liverpool have come nowhere close since the Premier League started tells me more about their abilities than winning one match.

Injuries are a part of the game. If you have a team which relies on two players ie, Torres and Gerrard, you will always have problems. That is why you need a squad capable of winning. Put simply, Liverpool do not have the squad to win it.

Manchester United had to deal with a multitude of defensive injuries, Rooney and Ronaldo have been on the sidelines for a month each and where are they in the League? Injuries are no excuse…….Liverpool are not top because they are not the best team in the country. They are nowhere near in truth.

You might want to withdraw or ar least re-write this load of drivel.

Ferguson is the one who have been shown wanting – attitude of players; naive tactics and silly comments.

@Walton Breck: the article was in reference to the Premier League and unless I misunderstood, yesterdays game was still only worth 3 points and Man utd are STILL top of the table and STILL have a game in hand.

Sorry Walton, one match (or two before you point to the Anfield tie) Champions does not make. I wont lie. This defeat hurts bad. But we’ll see how the season ends.

Liverpool are still third in the table right? United are still top? Game on!
