Van der Sar, Neville and Wes Brown miss Celtic trip

November 5, 2008

Manchester United trio Edwin van der Sar, Gary Neville and Wes Brown are all missing from the squad which travelled to Glasgow today ahead of tomorrow’s Champions League encounter with Celtic.

The club have confirmed that Van der Sar is being rested whilst Wes Brown has failed to shake off an ankle injury. It is less clear whether Neville has picked up an injury but with Brown out, you would have expected Neville to make the squad; even just for cover. Rafael da Silva travelled with the squad so he looks set for his 5th start of the season.

Ben Foster is set to make his first appearance of the season for the club ahead of Tomasz Kuszczak who will sit on the bench for the tenth time this season.

Neville injury forces him out of Ole’s testimonial

August 1, 2008

Gary Neville has picked up a calf strain which will keep him out of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s testimonial match on Saturday again RCD Espanyol.

Neville is hoping to return to the Manchester United first team this season after missing all but 10 minutes of the 2007/08 season due to injury. This most recent injury is not expected to keep the United captain out for long with Ferguson expecting him to be available for selection when Juventus visit Old Trafford for our final pre season match on Wednesday.

Gary Neville ready to fight for his place

For those players not involved in the Euros this summer, pre-season training begins on Wednesday and Gary Neville is fired up and raring to go. After a string of injuries, the England right back is preparing for what he calls a ‘hugely important’ pre-season as he begins to prove his fitness to the boss in an attempt to oust the impressive Wes Brown.

“I’ve got a number of challenges ahead of me and the ultimate one is to try and get back into that team ahead of Wes” he told MUTV.

“That’s going to be hard for me given the way Wes performed last season. I would say he was in our top two or three most consistent players. He was fantastic throughout the season and deserved all the success he got.”

Great to see Gary Neville back in the first team.

Gary Neville makes his season debut

April 9, 2008

Gary Neville ReturnsGary Neville made his first appearence of the season for the first team last night after coming on in the 81st minutes of tonights 1 - 0 win over Roma. Neville has been out for the last 12 months with a series of niggling injuries and after making his long awaited comeback said:

“It means everything, it has been so frustrating. The initial injury was quite a bad one but ever since then it has just been little niggles that have just kept coming”. He went on, “I just think sometimes that happens when you have a serious injury but hopefully now I think I have had the most consistent run of training without interruption and hopefully I can stay fit.”

Nevilles return could prove vital with Nemanja Vidic ruled out at present but a recall to the first team might not be round the corner with Wes Brown deputising very well in Neville’s right back role. With the season so close the end, I doubt Fergie will want to upset a defense formula that has worked so well.

From the moment Gary stepped foot onto the field, there were chants of Neville from the crowd with the fans urging the players to get the ball to Gary at every possible chance. Speaking of the reception and his return he said:

“It was a good reception”.

“Constantly over the last 12 months people have been asking me and it gets a bit embarrassing to be honest.

“You give them dates because you think you’re coming back but it never materialises, but the fans have always been great to me.”
