Tevez’s Contract; let’s sign it in Rome
25 January 09 by Bill
Whilst watching Manchester United’s FA Cup win over Tottenham on Saturday it suddenly dawned on me. Carlos Tevez was once again the hardest working United player on the pitch. Right up until the final whistle he was hunting out chances and chasing down the ball. Winning in the FA Cup with just minutes to go and he still wanted to make something happen. We should definitely sign the Argentine; just not until the end of the season.
We all know one of Tevez’s greatest qualities is his work ethic but trying to get that contract might just push him that little bit further. Everyone performs better when they have something to prove and Tevez is no different. Tevez wants to stay at Old Trafford and whilst I have questioned the transfer from time to time, it is a lot of money after all, I am now convinced he should become a long term United player.
Tevez is currently on loan with the Champions who have the option to make the deal permanent for an agreed fee, believed to be about £32 million. United have first refusal so as long as they pay the money, they get the player. There is no chance of anyone nipping in and taking him from under our noses but there is the chance Tevez will lose patience with the club and resign himself to the fact he‘s not wanted and begin to look elsewhere. Perhaps that is true and maybe it will happen but if it’s not, and Ferguson does want him to stay, he simply wont allow that to happen. Look at his history; Ferguson doesn’t lose players he doesn’t want to lose.
With injuries already playing their part and the hunt for trophies continuing on four fronts, having Carlos Tevez with something to prove could be the difference between a good season and an unbelievable one. The Champions League final will be played in Rome this year. Let’s offer Tevez a contract, but let’s wait until then.

Bill I think you’re like one of the few bloggers who seem to echo my view of Tevez’s hardworking characteristics. He makes runs at defenders while their holding on to the ball and keeps the pressure up. He chases after every ball! United should definitely sign him on. I mean, if they paid 30 mil for Berbatov, they should do the same to get Tevez.
I already wrote a comment on Footbo but figured I would on the longer post too. I have never been more convinced that United need to just take the plunge and make sure that we secure Tevez’s long term future at the club. With his passion, he is a player who wont disappoint…
@Ulrik Fredrik: I agree, £30 million is a lot of money but not THAT MUCH nowadays. United are going to have to pay £30 million to find another striker on par with Tevez anyway so keep him!
@Danny: Imagine 11 players in a team with his desire, what a team that would be!!
I agree completely with the comments about his workrate and desire. Another reason to sign Tevez permanently is that the fee under consideration is not £32m, but closer to £22m. As I understand it, United have already paid £10m. That money is “lost” regardless of whether he stays or not. So the question now is if he’s worth £22m. I think he is.
He is easily worth the £22m and probably more. They will be stupid to let him go.
