The season is over but get to it Fergie, there’s more to do
May 29, 2008
If you think its time for Alex Ferguson to relax and bask in the glory of an incredibly successful l season, think again. I am sure Sir Alex had plans to relax and unwind this summer but all that is on hold as he now plans to fly out to Geneva in Switzerland to meet up with Cristiano Ronaldo where he is currently with the rest of the Portugal squad preparing for the Euros. The intense speculation surrounding Ronaldo’s future is priority number one and I for one am sure it won’t be all pleasantries when the two get together.
Were all well aware of the Real Madrid situation but Real Madrid aren’t the only ones in the wrong. I am sure Ferguson will also be less than impressed with Ronaldos ambiguous discussions with the press. He has reiterated his love of Manchester United on numerous occasions but will he commit? Not a chance, he keeps reeling off this “decision in two to three weeks” spiel and I bet he didn’t say that to Fergie before he left for International duty. In fact, from what I recall, he was positive he would be staying. Less than 10 days ago when asked about leaving he replied “No no, I’m going to stay”.
That said, Ronaldo is our star asset and Ferguson needs to convince him that his future is at Old Trafford. At least his short term future if nothing else.
There has been so much in the press recently about Ronaldo wanting to play in Spain and Real Madrid being able to offer him the world but what seems to have been forgotten is the importance of Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson in particular. Ferguson is probably the best manager in the world for aiding the development of young talent. In Ferguson, Ronaldo has more than a boss, he has a man that will elevate him to the next level. He knows how important the club have been in helping him get where he is today and he knows there is more to learn.
I do think he’ll leave Manchester United at some point but not yet, he’s not stupid. When you have the opportunity to learn from the best you take it and I fully expect him to do that.
