The Sun tells porkies; Ronaldo wins apology and damages

19 June 08 by Bill McGlone

Cristiano Ronaldo today won an apology from The Sun newspaper and an undisclosed amount in damages over a false story published in the newspaper back in February.

The Sun claimed Ronaldo had been fined £8,000 by club manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, for an alleged text message Ronaldo sent during training; the use of mobile phones is prohibited during training sessions.

Simon Smith, Ronaldo’s lawyer, today withdraw the claim for damages stating the newspaper had admitted it was wrong, apologised and agreed a financial package to compensate. The undisclosed amount will be donated to charity by Ronaldo.

In a statement issued by his lawyer, Ronaldo said: “Contrary to the impression the article gave, I take training very seriously and do not want people to think I do not try my best in training”.

The Sun have so far refused to comment.
