Why Carlos Tevez WILL sign
9 March 09 by Christopher Hurley
If you look at United’s goal scorers chart this season, you wont be surprised by the names occupying the top four spots; Cristiano Ronaldo (16), Wayne Rooney (16), Dimitar Berbatov (13) and Carlos Tevez (12).
Wayne Rooney cost £30 odd million, so did Berba and I think it’s safe to say any club with the cash would pay £30 million for Cristiano Ronaldo. £30 million sounds like a lot of money to you and I but to a club like United, it is the ‘going rate’ for top quality players.
Make no mistake about it; Carlos Tevez is a top quality player.
There are plenty of technically great footballers. There are also a lot of footballers with a work ethic second to none. There are very few however who possess both of these qualities and when they do come about, you simply cannot pass them up for something as trivial as money.
I suspected a while ago that United were holding out on signing Tevez permanently in an effort to further increase the players efforts and based on his recent performances, I still think that.
Ferguson has notoriously chased the holy grail of four top quality strikers. With Ronaldo in the team, he’ll be happy with three. And that is exactly what he has got now. If Tevez leaves, who will fill his shoes? Danny Welbeck is certainly not ready for 30 games a season and a replacement of Tevez’s quality wont come cheap. No, getting rid of Tevez would be a mistake and an expensive one at that.
Carlos Tevez epitomises Manchester United and he wants to stay. Alex Ferguson wants him to stay; I want him to stay and I’ll even bet you want him to stay. Don’t you?

Without a doubt Tevez is technically a very good player and the reason we all love him is that he works like a demon, but is he worth 30 million? i dont think so personally, the transfer market has changed, with the exception of city nobody in this economic climate can justify paying huge transfer fees anymore and i dont think we should be going down the same path as city, throwing money around like its going out of fashion, i hope he stays and if we can find a happy medium that keeps everyone happy without being held to ransom then great
Tevez is a superb player but is too expensive.

@Pat j: How do you guage a players value? Do you think he is worth the same as Berbatov for instance?
Nani and Anderson together cost in excess of £30 million. They were teenagers when bought and haven’t exactly set the world on fire; especially not this season.
Manchester United pay top price for players. It’s natural and it’s always going to happen. Other clubs no we’re not short of a bob or two. If Tevez leaves, do you think Ferguson would sign a replacement? I can’t see him relying on Welbeck and replacing Tevez with a striker of similar quality will cost a big chunk of wedge anyway.
I agree most clubs cannot afford to pay these fees banded about nowadays but you must remember there are financial benefits to being so successful. Revenue from the Premier League doubled just last year (or was it the year before?), winning the Champions League nets a fair bit of cash and then we have the Club World Cup plus United’s promotional matches and far eastern tours.
Add into the mix rising ticket prices, merchandising and TV deals and you will see that United are turning over a pretty huge amount. £30 million is not cheap I will agree. But we can afford it and I hope that we sign him.
@Bestplayerintheworld: he’s not even in your short list. I’d have to choose ‘Other’
I may agree with you that Man utd are delaying their offer to sign Tevez to get more from him.. but the idea of paying 30million for a player on loan (loan from a company not a club!) doesn’t make sense for me.. Kia should lower Tevez price…and he will in the summer…. then we will get the player…
cheers
SAF and Man Utd want Tevez, there is no doubt. You figure if SAF likes Rooney, he’s going to like Tevez, too.
I do think they could expect a little more out of Tevez – a little more creativity in combination attack, and to beat the keeper with his shots more often. Of course that “beating the keeper” comment would apply to the other 3 mentioned as well!
I think it is all a matter of the price and perhaps positioning for a better bargain. It is an uncomfortable business arrangement now and buying proposition. I suspect it is up to the board to decide whether to spend the $30M but with Tevez performing I think SAF will have a word with the board if Tevez is allowed to leave!
When you think about Tevez think about the 12 goals he contributes but also the 3 goals he is not scoring on you which he would if he were on a competitor’s side!
So he’s good for something like 15 in goal differential!
with everything said, i guess it is up to me to sum up all the opinions: hard worker both on and off the pitch, a formidable striker but we all disagree on his price tag. i say buy him up, because like Chris said, player with both qualities are hard to find if one were to be found, this new player would have to adapt to Man Utd (if the new player does eventually adapt- think Diego Forlan) which in turn would leave the squad with only 3 and not 4 top class players.
